Mathematics
AP Calculus AB covers topics in a first-year college Calculus I course and explains topics in differential and integral calculus. Students will learn calculus through lectures, readings, animations, activities, and resources in the online textbook. In addition, students will be provided with written materials. Student knowledge will be assessed by completion of weekly exercises, online tutorials, supplementary readings, homework assignments, chapter tests, and other activities. This course prepares students to succeed in the AP exam in Calculus AB and subsequent math courses.
Topics: functions, graphs, limits and continuity, derivatives of basic functions, applications of the derivative, implicit differentiation, curve sketching, related rates, implicit differentiation to find the derivative of an inverse function, integration, applications of integration, geometric interpretation of differential equations via slope fields, and L’Hôpital’s rule.
AP Calculus BC covers topics in a first-year college Calculus II course and advances the student’s understanding of concepts covered in high school Calculus. Students are expected to have completed AP Calculus AB before beginning AP Calculus BC, and will have all of the AP Calculus AB material available for review purposes. CTM instructor guides students through lectures, readings, animations, activities, and resources in the online textbook and written materials. Progress of students will be assessed by weekly exercises, online tutorials, supplementary readings, homework assignments, chapter tests, and other activities. The goal is to prepare students for the AP exam in Calculus BC.
Topics: techniques of integration, applications of integral calculus, logarithmic and exponential functions, parametric equations and polar coordinates, sequences and series, differential equations, introduction to vector calculus and geometry.
Honors Pre-Calculus covers the study of functions and help students develop skills necessary for the study of calculus. The course includes analytical geometry and trigonometry.
AP Statistics provides college-level instruction on the concepts and tools for working with data. Students collect and analyze data and draw conclusions based on real-world information. The course challenges students to explore patterns, think critically, use a variety of tools and methods, and report their findings and conclusions.
AP Statistics differs significantly from Czech secondary schools, where descriptive statistics are mostly taught. Almost all universities encounter statistical data processing and analysis in most study programs, including humanities. The course prepares students for the AP exam.
Natural Science
AP Biology engages students in a wide variety of activities, with substantial emphasis on interpreting and collecting data in virtual labs, writing analytical essays and mastering biology concepts and connections. The key themes include: the scientific processes, the affects of science on technology and society, the chemistry and the make up of living organisms, genetics, diversity, and evolution. The course includes popular Thinkwell videos. Students are expected to answer questions, reflect on issues and complete lab activities. The primary emphasis is to develop an understanding of concepts rather than memorizing terms and technical details. The course prepares students for the AP exam.
AP Chemistry is the equivalent to a first-year college chemistry course in both its content and laboratory component providing students a strong foundation to support future advanced studies in chemistry. The course includes popular Thinkwell videos. The course prepares students for the AP Chemistry exam.
AP Physics 1 and AP Physics 2 provide students with an academic experience of a first-year college into the concepts and methods of physical analysis, focused on classical mechanics and simple electrical circuits. Building the ability to reason qualitatively and quantitatively is a primary focus, with inquiry and investigation, modeling and diagramming, symbolic algebra, unit analysis, communication and argumentation, laboratory techniques, data analysis, and integration and application of concepts as emphasized skills. These two courses prepare students for AP exams.
English
Writing Nonfiction is a 10-week course that alternates between advanced reading exercises, with short-answer comprehension checks, and writing essays. The emphasis is on content, style, and organization more than on grammar. Students should already be comfortable with English syntax and have experience writing their own texts of at least a paragraph in length. They should be able to understand news articles in English with the help of a bilingual dictionary. During the 10-week course, students will read and respond to four assigned readings, write four essays, exchange feedback with their peers through a workshop, and revise one of their essays as the final project. There is one assignment per week.
Creative Writing – Literary Lab Creative Writing offers a unique opportunity to enhance the ability to formulate complex ideas, think critically and express oneself in writing. The course consists of an attractive combination of creative writing tasks and inspiring thought experiments, providing the fullest experience to both consumers & producers of literary texts.
Advanced Placement Courses
Advanced Placement (AP) courses are the most popular and also the most demanding in the CTM Online Program. They offer college-level curricula and examinations to secondary school students. They emphasize critical thinking and reasoning as well as learning through inquiry. Over seven weeks of intensive studies, students gain detailed knowledge of key subjects, substantially improve their technical English and become well prepared for AP exams and university admission. By taking AP exams, students prove their interest, ability and determination to succeed in university studies. CTM is a partner of the College Board for administering AP exams at Czech and Slovak schools.
Students choose most often: AP Biology, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics I, AP Chemistry, AP Macroeconomics, AP English Language and Composition.
