Czech High School Students Excel in CTYOnline Courses and AP Exams

Best Czech high schools students compete successfully with the world’s best! They prove this by their outstanding results in Advanced Placement (AP) exams. To succeed calls for motivation, discipline and some 10 – 12 hours of extra study time every week in CTYOnline courses.
Last school year 46 Czech and 7 Slovak students took AP exams through the Center for Talented Youth (Centrum pro talentovanou mládež, z.s.), the official partner of the College Board in the Czech Republic. They did superbly in the most rigorous CTYOnline AP courses, earning on average a 4.00 on a 5-point scale for AP exams compared to the global average of 2.89. They confirmed that they belong among the very best. In recognition of their accomplishments they have received internationally recognized evaluation certificates, which play an important role in an admission process to world’s top universities.
AP exams are examinations taken in specialized subjects (such as mathematics, biology, physics, etc.) that test the understanding of the given subject in an interdisciplinary perspective, covering high school curricula and reaching into the first year of university study. Joining their peers, Czech high school students take AP exams when they can prove their determination and ability to work in the given subject at a university level. AP exams are created and managed by the College Board, USA. They are held every year in May. Since May 2014 five Czech high schools are certified as test centers for AP exams.
Students are mostly interested in CTYOnline courses and AP exams in mathematics and biology. In the last school year, they achieved the highest possible grade – 5 - in AP Calculus BC (an exam in advanced math). They also achieved outstanding results in IT (AP Computer Science) and physics (AP Physics 1). PORG high school, Prague, had the overall best results. An ideal way to prepare for AP Exams is to take CTYOnline AP courses. The American Fund for Czech and Slovak Leadership Studies sponsors these courses (AFCSLS; www.afcsls.org).
Last school year, 147 Czech students from 37 high schools, and 37 Slovak students from 9 Slovak high schools took CTYOnline courses. After a long dispute, the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports ultimately delivered on its commitment and paid scholarships to 145 Czech students. The Czech students did well; 122 of them (83%) successfully finished their courses, more than 40% with – 5 – the best grade. In addition to deepening their knowledge of the studied subject, they improved their professional English and got to understand their subject as it links to other disciplines. Also, they learned time management skills and how to work effectively with a variety of online resources. Many of these students compete successfully in international competitions in mathematics and physics, prepare for their high school graduation and university entrance exams. Some were accepted to the university of their dreams.
Excellent results of Czech students, the interest and support from schools, students and their parents have convinced the AFCSLS Executive Council to continue provide scholarships in the current school year. Supported by a letter of recommendation from their school , scholarship covering 30 – 50% of the course fees will be automatically awarded to all gifted and motivated students. In addition, students from economically disadvantaged background could study for free. Slovak students benefit from a complementary scholarship program made available by our Slovak partners which is in addition to AFCSLS scholarships.
CTYOnline provides an equal opportunity to all talented Czech high school students on merit, regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds. Already at high school, Czech students can study CTYOnline courses prestigious Johns Hopkins University, complete their studies with an internationally recognized certificate, and take the AP exam.
Registration for the CTYOnline courses for the school year 2015/2016 is open until 11th November, 2015.

AP Exams
AP Exams are examinations taken in specialized subjects (such as mathematics, biology or physics), and test student’s knowledge and grasp of the in the interdisciplinary context, covering the curricula of both high school and of the first year university of studies. AP Exams can now also be taken by Czech students who can prove their knowledge and ability to work within the given field on a university level. AP exams are created and managed by the College Board, USA, (https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/exploreap).
College Board, USA, is a non-profit organization founded in 1900, which helps more than 7 million students every year to get ready for their successful university studies. College Board (CB) gives accreditation to Advance Placement (AP) programs, manages and organizes SAT test of study dispositions and international AP exams. Members of the College Board are over 6,000 high schools, non-profit organizations and leading educational institutions from all over the world. In its activities, function and authority, CB represents an equivalent of Ministries of Education on an international scale (https://www.collegeboard.org/).
The Centre for Talented Youth is the partner of the College Board for the international AP Exams and for obtaining the student results in the Czech Republic.
In 2014, five Czech high schools schools (gymnázium) were certified by the College Board to organize the AP exams: Gymnázium Arabská, Gymnázium Jana Keplera Prague, Gymnázium Jana Nerudy, Gymnázium Nad Alejí, Gymnázium Nový PORG / PORG, Prague. It is here where Czech and Slovak students may take the international AP Exam.
Through the Center for Talented Youth, a partner of the College Board in the Czech Republic, 53 students (46 Czechs and 7 Slovaks) have applied for their AP international exams in 2015. These students have reached outstanding results, scoring an average of 4,0 points on a 5-point scale, with the world average reaching 2,89. By achieving this exceptional score, they have proven that thanks to their knowledge they rank among the best students worldwide. As a token of their excellence, they have received an internationally recognized certificate which is of utmost importance for their admission to world’s top universities.
Students are traditionally most interested in AP in mathematics and biology. The students achieved the best result possible, i.e. 5 points, in AP Calculus, a higher mathematics exam. Outstanding results were also achieved in IT (AP Computer Science) and physics (AP Physics 1). Four of the students have taken two AP exams and were able to get through demanding process of preparation as well as the exam itself with outstanding results. Only 4 students have obtained less than 3 points.

CTY John Hopkins University CTYOnline Courses
CTYOnline courses are aimed at talented students; they offer them intensive study of mathematics, physics, biology, programming and other more than 100 courses throughout the school year. The courses are offered online and are completely in English. Every student cooperates with his own CTY instructor who gives him continual guidance, feedback, support and evaluation throughout the course. CTYOnline courses offer an opportunity for the students to compare their knowledge and skills with other students from all over the world. As part of their CTYOnline course, students go through intensive training in their subject of specialization; year-long Advance Placement (AP) courses offer training and examination in their specialized subject, covering 3 – 4 years of a typical high school curriculum.
CTYOnline Advanced Placement (AP) are courses certified by College Board, USA, designed for students in the final years of their high-school study. These courses summarize the subject matter covered in Czech and Slovak high-school curricula, combining it with university curriculum. These courses allow students to understand the subject of their specialization in broader interdisciplinary perspective, and improve their technical terminology. AP courses prepare students for their future studies at top world universities.
The most popular CTYOnline courses are Advance Placement (AP): AP Biology, AP Calculus, AP Physics, AP Chemistry, AP Macroeconomics and Microeconomics, AP Psychology, AP English, and AP Computer Science.
CTYOnline courses offer talented high-school students offer the possibility to compete in virtual classes with the best students from all around the world, and study courses offered by a prestigious American university, concluded with internationally recognized certificates or, in many cases, with an international AP exam already during their high-school studies.

Who is Who?
The American Fund for Czech and Slovak Leadership Studies (AFCSLS) focuses of raising individuals who will represent the key difference in competitiveness and living standards in the Czech and Slovak Republics. This fund is a successor to the American Fund for Czechoslovak Refugees, founded in 1948 (http://www.afcsls.org).
The Center for Talented Youth (CTY) focuses on finding and supporting exceptional students from their early childhood. CTY is a non-profit institute of the American John Hopkins University. Since 1979, CTY focuses on highly talented students and prepares them for demanding and motivating study programs (http://cty.jhu.edu).
Centre for Talented Youth (CTM; Centrum pro talentovanou mládež, z.s.) manages the CTYOnline program for gifted high-school students in the Czech and Slovak Republics, and organizes full-time program “Objevitelské soboty” for gifted and inquisitive students aged between 5 and 15 years. The Centre is a partner organization of College Board, responsible for organization of AP test in the Czech and Slovak Republics (www.objevitelske-soboty.cz).
